Emotional Hangover. What Is It?
Most people may not even be aware of this context, emotional hangover. What is it and how can it affect you? Emotional hangover is a state of feeling really tired, low in energy and generally feeling off in a terrible sort of way. A part of you knows the feeling isn’t right and it may try to fight it, but in reality what you need are:
Adequate rest for the emotions to recalibrate and re-stabilise, in a way that puts the body back into a state of health and homeostasis.
Really staying away from any high emotionally charged activities.
Engaging in calming and soothing practices.
Eating well
Resting in a calm and peaceful state.
Sleeping.
Staying away from all screens.
Slowing down.
Connecting with nature.
Time. The old adage time heals all things works in this scenario too. Just give your body the time it need to re-regulate and rebalance the sensitive system.
Like with a lot of sensitive system issues, time and space are always the greatest healer. And usually time and space are what most people don’t want to give, because we mostly live in a busy world where we want to get back to our list of tasks to do, be what we need to be in the world.
What Causes Emotional Hangover?
Conscious, unconscious, subconscious reactions to highly charged emotional experiences. This experience could be watching an high impact action movie, watching a fight like UFC, watching a much loved sport game that triggers high levels of emotional responses, even engaging in highly charged conversations, experiences like noisy parties can be too much for the sensitive system. Also remember what may be too much for you, may be normal, or not enough charge to cause emotional hangover for another person. This is where self awareness is important for building self knowledge.
How To Spot Emotional Hangover?
Become aware when you are watching or have watched highly charged contents, movies, or engaged in high emotionally charged conversations with others, like an intense argument, a fight, or a very excitable conversation. Once intense emotions have been triggered consciously, unconsciously or subconsciously, it is only a matter of time, a few hours maximum a day before one starts to feel off, low in energy, disturbed and sometimes fighting for the feelings to go away, because it may be difficult to understand what is happening, why it is happening, since it may sometimes seem like there are no known causes for it.
Learning to work with your emotions, understanding your sensitive system and learning to consciously regulate it, is one of the biggest gifts you can gift yourself. As a famous person once said - The quality of your life is the quality if your consistent emotions. Your emotions may control how you feel and how you feel can control how you live your life and what actions you take.
